What Is a Reach-In Refrigerator?

One of the most common kinds of commercial refrigerators is the reach-in refrigerator. Reach-in refrigeration units can be considered one of the most important appliances in a restaurant's kitchen. There are a variety of styles of reach-in refrigerators to choose from, each highlighting different features. The most important thing is finding the right fit for your establishment's kitchen.

In short, a reach-in refrigerator is a prefabricated reach-in compartment for cooling foods, ingredients, and/or drinks. A reach-in commercial refrigerator is often used in smaller restaurants that don’t require storing a large supply or stock of ingredients. Bigger restaurants will more commonly feature walk-in refrigerators instead of reach-in coolers. These types of refrigerators are actually a small enclosed room that stores a large variety of restaurant or commercial items, mostly in bulk.

Types of Reach-In Coolers and Refrigerators

When choosing a commercial reach-in cooler, it is important to consider what type of door material you want for your refrigerator. Reach-in refrigerators feature either glass, solid, or solid-and-glass combination doors.

Solid-door reach-in freezers, refrigerators, and coolers are excellent for restaurant kitchens that are well organized. These refrigerators or freezers are usually situated near the cooking area so that items kept inside the freezers or refrigerators can easily be accessed.

If you are looking to get a reach-in refrigerator or reach-in freezer with a solid door, there are some things that you will need to consider: (1) Door Swing and number of doors. It's a good idea to determine where you will place your fridge prior to purchasing. Why? You need to consider where your reach-in's door will swing so you don't disrupt the workflow of your kitchen. In fact, 2-door reach-in refrigerators or 2-door reach-in freezers can be an excellent choice because the positioning of the two doors will not interrupt your kitchen's workflow. (2) Length of Door. The door length should just be enough to provide ample space for people in the kitchen to work even when the fridge or freezer is opened. (3) Location of Compressor. Location of your commercial reach-in freezer or refrigerator is also one of the most important factors to consider. An advantage of compressors mounted at the top is that they provide a more efficient cooling process while compressors located at the bottom make for easier cleaning.

On the other hand, when looking at glass-door reach-in refrigerators, you have the option of choosing either swinging or sliding doors. A lot of restaurant or bar owners usually opt for sliding doors because they are perfect for tight kitchens, while reach-in freezers, refrigerators, or coolers usually provide a bigger reach-in area.

Reach-in freezers or fridges that have mixed solid and glass doors let you enjoy the advantages of both solid-door and glass units.
