What Is a Tail Piece?
A tail piece is an important piece of equipment for the beer dispenser of your bar, pub, tavern, or restaurant. To put it simply, the tail piece is where the gas line from the primary or secondary regulator connects to.
Another way to put it is that the beer comes out via the tail piece, which is in turn connected to a hose that is connected to the beer-faucet shank. Generally, a 3/16" tail piece is perfect for use in household and direct-draw beer applications. The 3/16" tail piece is generally included in most coupler assemblies.
On the other hand, the 5/16" and 3/8" tail piece is typically used in most long- and short-draw commercial applications. In other words, these are the most common tail piece units that you will find in majority of food-service and beverage-service establishments (in other words, bars pubs, taverns, restaurants, and clubs) that serve chilled or cooled draft beer.
Most keg couplers actually come with a 5/16" gas hose tail piece on the side.
