What Is Walk-In Shelving?
Just like dunnage racks, walk-in cooler shelves are used inside walk-in coolers and freezers to help store food and beverage items above the ground and keep them clean and sanitary. The difference is that dunnage racks are kept relatively low to the ground and are only a few inches high, while shelving for walk-in coolers can be as much as seventy-four inches in height. Also, dunnage racks are limited to one shelf or level as they are more suited for stacking heavy and bulky items such as boxes full of bottles and cans or sacks of flour, corn, and rice. Walk-in cooler shelving has the advantage of multiple levels or shelves, which can also accommodate heavy to light items for refrigeration or freezing.
It is important to note, however, that regardless of how sturdy or well built your storage containment system or walk-in cooler shelf is, proper stacking should still be observed: the lighter items should be reserved for the top-level shelves while the heavier ones should be kept in the lowest levels. This is to minimize untoward incidents or accidents where heavy items might fall off from the higher levels of the cooler shelves and drop onto kitchen staff. This also helps keep the storage shelves in excellent condition as very heavy items stocked on the topmost levels of commercial walk-in refrigerator shelves may bend the top shelves and may cause the integrity of the rack to suffer.
