What Are Hose Clamps?

A hose clamp is a device that is used to attach and seal a hose onto a fitting such as a barb or nipple. Hose clamps are commonly used as beer line clamps for beer hoses and lines for beer-dispensing systems.

Every hose used in a draft-beer system is used to transfer either liquid or gas from one point to another within the dispensing system. In order to effectively do this, both ends of the hose needs to be mechanically connected to other parts within the beer-dispensing system, such as the keg couplers, regulators, valves and other components. This is where beer line clamps come in. A hose clamp is used to hold the hose onto certain parts of the beer system.

Different Types of Beer Line Clamps and How They Work

There are different beer line clamps to choose from, depending on their functions within a draft-beer system.

Worm Drive Clamps — Worm drive hose clamps are some of the most common clamps used across a wide range of applications. A worm drive clamp can be used in tandem with a garden hose and as a beer line clamp as well as in other plumbing applications. A worm drive hose clamp works via a screw mechanism and a metal strap or band that is designed with a series of slots cut into it. The worm drive clamp is placed around the beer hose or beer tube that is to be connected, with the loose end continuously fed into a narrow space between the band and the captive screw. When the screw is turned, it acts as a worm drive (hence the name), pulling the threads of the band and tightening around the hose (or when screwed the opposite direction, to loosen). Worm drive hose clamps are normally used for hoses 1/2" diameter and up, with other clamps used for smaller hoses.

Ear Clamps — Ear hose clamps typically consist of a stainless-steel band that forms around one or more closing elements also called “ears,” hence their name. The ear hose clamp is positioned over the end of the hose or tube that needs to be connected, and then each ear is closed at the base of the ear with a special pincer tool so it permanently clamps down and pulls the band, tightening the band around the beer hose.

What's important to remember is that the size of the ear clamp should be carefully selected such that the ear is almost completely closed on installation to ensure a snug and protective fit.

An ear hose clamp also features a relatively narrow band width that is intended to provide a concentrated, tamper-resistant compression of the beer hose or beer tube. If the clamp ear is properly closed in accordance to the manufacturer's instructions and recommendations, it will safely provide constant jaw force, with a sealing effect that is solid and tolerant.
