What is an Ice Dispenser?

An ice dispenser is a type of ice machine that, as its name suggests, helps dispense ice. Ice dispensers differ from other types of ice machines in that they can create and dispense their own ice, thereby making it easier for your food-service crew or customers in your bar or restaurant.

How Do Ice Maker Dispensers Work?

There are different kinds of commercial ice dispensers, but the basic operation of these machines is fairly basic and is similar across brands and types. For example, most ice cube dispensers consist of an internal motor, an ice-cube tray that converts water into ice cubes, a heating coil, a bar that helps eject ice, a holding bin, a shut-off arm, and a timing switch that starts the process of ice-making.

In an ice dispenser, the freezing process is perhaps the most important part of the ice-making operation. Just like any ice maker, the machine's cooling unit proceeds to freeze the water that is stored inside. Once the cooling unit of the ice maker dispenser senses a drop in temperature, the heating coil (which is usually found underneath the molding tray) is triggered and warms the ice cubes somewhat, loosening them.

To eject the ice, an ice dispenser machine usually features ejector blades underneath the molding tray that proceed to eject the ice up and out of the tray and into a reservoir bin. While the bin is filled with ice, a metal wire is lifted and a shaft is opened that makes the ice cube fall into a glass or mug (or whatever container the customer or bartender uses). When the reservoir bin of the ice dispenser is emptied of ice, the ice-making and ejecting process is repeated with just a push of a button.

Many commercial ice dispensers feature a crushed-ice option. Crushed-ice dispensers have a mechanism inside that helps crush the larger cubes of ice into smaller flakes of ice. Flake ice can be conveniently packed and is perfect for display counters such as those used in groceries to effectively chill products such as seafood and meats and to help keep ingredients of a salad bar cool and fresh. Because flaked ice is moldable, grocery or salad bowl owners can actually pack it around their produce. Flake ice can also greatly improve the product displays while keeping the food safe from spoiling. Owners of grocery stores, delis, and salad bars would do well to procure a good-quality crushed ice dispenser for their establishment.
