What Are Glycol Beer Chillers and How Do They Work?
A glycol chiller is a type of refrigeration system that is used to cool a batch of antifreeze also known as “propylene glycol” or just “glycol” for short. The liquid is cooled and then pumped through a looped circuit of tubes that are connected to the input and output parts of the glycol cooling system. This is considered the main cooling line of your glycol beer cooler.
Glycol is usually chilled in a glycol chiller system just below the freezing point of water. This makes glycol cooling very effective for chilling beer and wines.
It is important to remember, however, that it is not advisable to use pure water as a cooling agent in a glycol beer cooling system or for cooling wines. This is because glycol has several advantages over water when used as a cooling agent in a glycol refrigeration unit: glycol is an antifreeze, so it can be chilled at subzero temperatures without icing-up the insides of the glycol cooler. Ice inside a glycol cooled draft system may end up damaging the unit and make the cooling substantially less effective. Glycol can also act as lubrication for the pump of a glycol refrigeration system. Glycol also tends to hold temperature a lot better compared to water in longer tubing runs.
Glycol chillers are also designed and manufactured especially for low-temperature applications, in contrast to other chillers that are built for medium temperatures. Hence, a glycol chiller is better designed for use in walk-in coolers and freezers.
How Can Your Business Benefit from Using Glycol Chiller Systems?
There are lots of benefits of using glycol chillers for your business especially if you run a bar and want to chill your draft beer and wines. A glycol beer system, for starters, is very easy and simple to install even if you don't have any prior refrigeration skills. Other benefits of using a glycol chiller include the following: no leaking of refrigerants into the cold space, lower lifetime service and maintenance costs, a cooling system that can be easily extended, and more savings.
A glycol beer chiller is commonly used in most large breweries, but is also used in smaller to medium-sized beer breweries. In these breweries, the temperature is adjusted to a desired cooling level in order to ferment and then chill the beer.
