How Glycol Lines and Beer Lines Work in Tandem Inside a Beer Python or Beer Trunk Line

A beer trunk line, also known as a beer python, is a cluster of beer lines and glycol lines bundled together and wrapped in plastic to form a vapor seal encased in insulated foam. The insulation foam is used to minimize heat gains over the length of the python.

In order to understand how a glycol line and a beer line work together inside a beer trunk line, one must be knowledgeable about how a glycol beer line cooling system works.

A glycol system is a kind of long-draw system for cooling beer that is most commonly used in establishments that serve cold draft beer. Generally, a glycol system utilizes glycol, a type of non-evaporating refrigeration liquid. The properties of this type of refrigerant allow it to cool quickly in temperatures that do not reach the freezing point.

To chill beer, glycol is passed through glycol lines alongside beer lines inside a beer python. In other words, multiple beer lines are combined side by side with glycol lines, which are all bundled inside an insulating foam rubber tube. This entire setup is also known as a beer trunk line. By chilling the liquid glycol and pumping it into a glycol line that run alongside a beer line, the draft beer is cooled and ready to be pumped into a spigot and into a customer's glass or mug. One advantage of a good-quality beer trunk line or beer python is that the glycol never actually comes in contact with the beer. The beer stays in the beer line, while the glycol stays in the glycol line.

In a nutshell, beer cooled using a glycol beer line cooling system is a type of long-draw system that contrasts with another type of system, the forced-air system. An advantage of a glycol system compared to a forced-air system is that it can be used for longer beer runs. The latter is limited to shorter beer runs. This is because beer lines and glycol lines used together inside a beer python or beer trunk line can run in length for more than twenty-five feet.

Bundled Glycol Lines and Beer Line

All our our beer pythons come in soft foam insulation, with the most flexible barrier tubing in the industry that allows the bundled glycol lines and beer lines inside to make tight turns. A 3/8-inch barrier tube inside the beer trunk line prevents flavor contamination. Beer lines are line numbered and glycol lines are color-coded for easy identification. A hermetically sealed inner tubing compartment prevents condensation from forming in the insulation.

Choose from two or four glycol lines and four, six, eight, ten, and twelve beer lines. Our beer trunk lines and beer pythons are sold by the foot, ranging in price from less than $10.00 up to $20.00.
