Each year, the North American Association of Food Equipment Manufacturers (NAFEM) recognizes contributions to the foodservice industry with their honorary Doctorate of Foodservice (DFS) awards. This award goes to individuals NAFEM feels are allied hospitality association leaders that have gone above and beyond in terms of significant improvements to the field.

At this year’s NAFEM show, Rapids’ co-owner Joe Schmitt was recognized for his contributions as the president of the Foodservice Equipment Distributors Association (FEDA). FEDA is comprised of enterprising individuals from nearly 300 companies across the USA, and is the nationally acknowledged organization for foodservice equipment and supply dealers.

Under Schmitt’s leadership, FEDA has been focusing on industry innovations such as revised educational strategies and improved collaboration throughout the field. Both of these enhancements aim to allow for, among other things, enriched industry relationships and more accurate communication for superior customer experience.

On the Rapids Wholesale side, Schmitt has been one of the driving forces behind this company since 1992, helping it to expand both in terms of size and of service. During his tenure, Rapids has continued to build on their reputation for providing quality service and products from start to finish, and even started branching out into other service areas. This includes, but is not limited to, the opening of a cash-and-carry store in Minnesota and the founding of Chain Restaurant Solutions, a multi-unit operator solution.

The DFS recipients were recognized at NAFEM’s annual All-Industry Awards Breakfast on February 9th, 2017.
