How to Choose the Ideal Commercial Hood Filters

Commercial hood filters are one of the major parts of a commercial kitchen ventilation system. It is therefore very important to choose the best commercial hood filters for your food-service establishment. Here's how.

Choose the proper hood filter size: It is important to note that commercial hood filters should always be installed with the baffles running in the vertical position. This will allow the grease to run down the baffles to the grease trough and then be collected inside the hood grease containment system. You must make sure that all filters fit tightly in the exhaust hood and that no gaps are present in the commercial hood filters.

Choose the proper hood filter type: A baffle filter is a unique roll-formed baffle that is designed to prevent flame from penetrating through the filter into the duct work. Two layers of equally spaced baffles creates an air flow that results in efficient grease removal. A baffle grease filter should be used in exhaust hoods where gas, electric, or steam-powered cooking equipment are present. Another type of kitchen grease filter is a spark arresting filter. This type of kitchen hood filter is used in hood exhaust systems that utilize solid fuel cooking appliances. A spark arrester filter, as its name suggests, helps to arrest any airborne sparks or embers created in the cooking process before they enter the grease ducts.

Choose the right material for your commercial kitchen hood filters: Restaurant hood filters are made of different types of materials. An aluminum grease filter offers a clean appearance and is cost-effective. An aluminum grease filter tends to have a seamless smooth surface that allows grease run-off into hood collection troughs and is safe and dependable. Galvanized commercial hood filters are also available, and are the cheapest option. A galvanized baffle grease filter is strong, rugged, and offers superb corrosion resistance.

A stainless-steel baffle grease filter, on the other hand, with its shiny appearance, is one of the most popular high-visibility commercial kitchen hood filters. They are also tough and rust- and corrosion-free.
